Sterling child fends off would-be kidnapper, suspect arrested

DENVER (KDVR) — A child fought off a would-be kidnapper in Sterling, and the suspect has been arrested.

The Sterling Police Department said the attempted child abduction happened in the early morning hours on Oct. 15 in the 300 block of Walnut Street. Officers said an 8-year-old girl was assaulted in her bedroom and fought with the suspect until he fled.

Using digital, forensic and physical evidence, Sterling police were able to identify and arrest Thomas Gallegos on Oct. 19 at 10:20 a.m.

"With the potential community threat of this serious crime, Sterling Police Officers and Detectives worked tirelessly around the clock seeking leads and gathering evidence," said Sterling police in a press release on Facebook.

Gallegos was arrested on the following charges:

  • First-degree burglary
  • Second-degree assault
  • Attempted second-degree kidnapping
  • Third-degree assault
  • Child abuse

Sterling police said there are no other suspects associated with the crime and there is no threat to the community.
