New suspect charged with first-degree murder in Rotella Park shooting

KDVR Fox 31

DENVER (KDVR) -- A different suspect is facing charges, including first-degree murder, after a double shooting in Rotella Park killed one and injured another in mid-October.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday the other juvenile from Adams County is facing the following charges:

  • First-degree murder - extreme indifference
  • First-degree assault - extreme indifference
  • Possession of a handgun by a juvenile
  • Multiple counts of an aggravated juvenile offender

The DA said that these charges come after a previous suspect was facing first-degree murder, but the charges were changed after new evidence became available.

Double shooting at Rotella Park

On the night of Oct. 12, a double shooting took place at the Adams County park that left a 15-year-old dead and another injured.

A few days later, a juvenile was arrested on multiple charges, including first-degree murder. The sheriff’s office said that suspect was under 13 years old.

Over a week after the arrest, the DA announced that the filing decision was updated after new evidence was found. Now, most of the charges were dropped against the original suspected shooter, and a different juvenile is now believed to be the alleged shooter.

The DA's office said that the original juvenile is now charged with possession of a handgun by a juvenile, while the new juvenile is facing multiple charges including first-degree murder.

The DA said no further information could be provided due to the suspects' ages.
